Dear ICLE member,
My name is David Schenk and currently I teach as a tenured professor of philosophy at Messiah College, but am now seeking teaching work elsewhere, preferably in classical Catholic schooling and not in higher ed. Attached you should find my cover letter, vitae, and conversion story/statement of faith. My interest is in teaching high school students, especially for philosophy, logic, theology, rhetoric, and composition. I also easily could offer some pick-up work in algebra, geometry, and calculus if needed.
I am a devout Christian who affirms not just the Nicene Creed, but all dogmas of traditional Christian orthodoxy. My denomination is Catholic, but please understand this is a denomination on my account, not a religion unto itself: my allegiance is to mere Christianity. I became Catholic in 2016 on the basis of philosophical theological reflection on the nature of personhood (especially I became convinced of hylomorphism largely in line with Aquinas’ understanding of it) and how the popular absence of this category has contributed to moral and spiritual alienation in America.
Since 2015 I have attended Saint Patrick’s Church of Carlisle, where I remain today.

I am a faithful Catholic History and Science teacher. I have 2 years of teaching science, including Chemistry, Biology, and Physics in addition to 1 year of teaching Ancient History. It has been a great joy to convert to the Faith as an adult and to guide children toward Truth. Hillsdale College helped to instill an appreciation for classical education. Since then I have continued to read and deepen my understanding of both teaching and my subject materials in of themselves. Most of all, I love working with students!

My career path has not been the traditional path taken to enter the teaching profession. However, it has afforded me the opportunity to observe what math and analytical skills students need to acquire to excel in college, as well as in a skilled trade. My unique combination of work experience in the construction trades, graduate degree in math, and years of math and science teaching experience would be an invaluable resource for students interested in a skilled trade, construction, industry, technology. The US is currently facing an unprecedented skilled labor shortage, in part due to our culture’s sole emphasis on going to college. I am an advocate for raising awareness of non-collegiate options, reducing the stigma surrounding technical training, and the benefits of pursuing a technical trade.

I am an educator following the classical curriculum. My areas of expertise are Latin, Greek, philosophy, and theology. I also teach math and incorporate the Greek and Latin roots of commonly used mathematical and scientific terms, as well as the Greek influence on our understanding of basic concepts, into my lessons. My education philosophy is: while the classes may differ in structure, the subjects are all connected in a common history and should be presented in harmony. I have and will continue to sign an oath of fidelity and profession of faith to the Catholic Church.
