St. Benedict Classical Academy (Natick, MA) – a Catholic, classical, character-focused elementary school serving children in Early Learning through Grade 8 – is seeking a qualified, experienced Second Grade Lead Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year.
Founded in 2013 as a parent-led initiative to provide an authentically Catholic education for their children, SBCA originally served students in grades K-6. In 2018, the school opened its Montessori-inspired early learning program. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school launched a middle school program and moved to its permanent campus at 89 Union Street in December 2024. The role of the Second Grade Lead Teacher is to support students in their growth in intellectual and personal virtue in their early elementary years. Working in collaboration with his/her grade-level partner, he/she guides students through advancing towards mastery of the academic objectives taught in second grade while modeling for and revealing to students how the Catholic faith and the pursuit of virtue are integrated into the formation of the intellect.
The Second Grade Lead teacher teaches all academic subjects (i.e., grammar, history, mathematics, phonics, reading, religion, and science) in a self-contained classroom. As a homeroom teacher, he/she guides his/her class through their participation in the life of the school and serves as the liaison between the school and the parents of the students in his/her homeroom class.
A key responsibility of the Second Grade Lead Teacher is to guide students through preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. In this catechetical role, the Second Grade Lead Teacher is tasked with preparing their students intellectually and spiritually for their encounter with Christ in these sacraments.
The Second Grade Teacher will:
- Work closely with colleagues, especially his/her grade-level partner, to ensure an integrated and cohesive formative experience for students.
- Prepare students intellectually and spiritually for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, ensuring that they know the spiritual and theological significance of these sacraments and are prepared to participate in them fully through their knowledge of the liturgical rites and their prayers.
- Design and maintain a joyful, welcoming, and orderly classroom environment characterized by order, beauty, and faith, where clear behavioral expectations are instilled and virtue is upheld.
- Maintain a schedule of assigned classroom duties for students.
- Lead students in prayer throughout the day, including at the beginning and end of each day and at snack/mealtimes.
- Implement the SBCA curriculum from a position of mastery of the disciplines taught.
- Design instructional experiences that reveal how the discipline taught enables us to know God more deeply and to serve Him more perfectly.
- Design instructional activities that are characterized by elements of classical pedagogy appropriate to the early elementary years, such as narration, mimetic instruction, memorization, and dialogic questioning.
- Deliver instruction and administer rubric-based assessments that are age-appropriate and aligned to second-grade curricular objectives.
- Produce written lesson plans and update them weekly in the Faculty Lesson Plan folder.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date performance and grade record for students and prepare progress reports and report cards on a trimesterly basis.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress.
- Send weekly class-wide emails (“the Monday Memo”) to parents communicating any information necessary for them to support their children’s academic progress and school engagement (e.g., homework updates, school/class events, etc).
- Attend and participate in monthly All-Faculty and K-2 team meetings.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, both those provided by the school and those pursued independently.
- Participate actively in the liturgical and prayer life of the school.
- Participate in school events and activities, both during the school day and outside of school hours (e.g., Parent-Teacher Conferences, Trunk or Treat, Open Houses and other admissions events, Gala).
- Lead his/her homeroom in participating in homeroom-based, grade-level, and school-wide events (e.g., holiday parties, Houses of Faith, Catholic Schools Week, Field Day, etc.)
- Assist in drop-off and pick-up duties and other proctoring duties (lunch, recess, etc) as necessary.

- A strong commitment to our school’s mission and the Catholic faith.
- Experience in and a deep love of working with early elementary children and their primary educators, their parents.
- Enthusiasm for and familiarity with Catholic classical/liberal arts pedagogy.
- The ability to model for students a life committed to Christian discipleship, virtue, and a love of learning.
- A positive outlook and a good sense of humor.
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field by the time of employment.
Faculty at SBCA are required to sign a Statement of Faith. They are also required to submit to background screening as well as complete required safe environment and mandated reporter training.
