Saint Theresa Catholic School is a PreK–8 Catholic school located in Sugar Land, Texas, fully committed to providing an education that unites the wisdom of the classical tradition with a firm foundation in Catholic faith and morals. Sacred music is understood as an essential expression of Catholic culture and worship, with Gregorian chant serving as the normative musical language of the Roman Rite. Instruction in sacred music is therefore integral to the school’s mission and to the liturgical formation of its students.
Position Overview
The Sacred Music Teacher is responsible for the instruction and formation of students in sacred music through the Ward Method, with Gregorian chant at the heart of the curriculum. This role serves students in PreK–8th grade and supports the school’s liturgical life through the careful preparation of chant, hymnody, and other sacred repertoire appropriate to the Roman Catholic tradition.
Essential Responsibilities
The Sacred Music Teacher will:
- Teach sacred music using the Ward Method, with systematic instruction in:
- Solfege and tonal memory
- Rhythmic precision
- Musical notation and literacy
- Vocal technique and ensemble singing
- Provide explicit, sustained instruction in Gregorian chant, including:
- Modal understanding
- Latin pronunciation and diction
- Chant notation and interpretation
- Chant as prayer within the liturgy
- Form students to sing the Church’s chant repertoire with accuracy, reverence, and confidence
- Prepare students for active and intelligent participation in the sung liturgy, including school Masses, feast days, and seasonal celebrations
- Teach sacred music as an expression of prayer, discipline, and beauty, ordered toward worship rather than performance
- Foster an orderly, joyful, and disciplined classroom environment rooted in virtue
- Collaborate with clergy, administration, and faculty to support the liturgical and classical mission of the school
- Serve as a faithful witness to the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will:
- Hold a degree in Music, Sacred Music, Music Education, or a related field
- Possess strong, demonstrable knowledge of Gregorian chant, including its theory, notation, and liturgical application
- Have formal training in or substantial experience with the Ward Method
- Be familiar with classical education and/or the Trivium
- Demonstrate fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church and actively live as a witness to Christ
- Exhibit strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills
- Show a commitment to ongoing professional and spiritual formation
A Master’s degree and/or additional formation in Sacred Music, Chant, Theology, or Classical Education is strongly preferred.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Advanced competence in Gregorian chant as the primary sacred music of the Roman Rite
- Training in vocal pedagogy, especially child voice development
- Facility with sight-singing, solfege, and rhythmic instruction
- Ability to teach chant and sacred music as part of a liberal arts education
- Experience supporting the liturgical life of a Catholic school or parish
- Basic piano or organ skills preferred
