School Profile

St. Monica Catholic School is a PreK-12 Catholic classical school located on Mercer Island, just east of Seattle, Washington. Our curriculum model, based on the Educational Plan of St. Jerome, immerses students in the beauty of Western civilization and the Catholic intellectual tradition. We are a parish school and bring students into the sacramental and liturgical life of St. Monica Catholic Church. Our grades 9-12 program was founded as a pilot in 2020 and was accredited in the fall of 2023. The program limits student cohorts to 12-15 members and emphasizes intellectual friendship through Socratic and Harkness seminars.

Ideal Candidate

St. Monica Catholic School is seeking a seeking a humanities generalist for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. The ideal candidate will possess an excellent liberal arts background, a worldview informed by Catholic anthropology, and the ability to teach some combination of integrated humanities (literature and history), theology, and/or Latin. St. Monica is interested in both experienced teachers and those with a passion for young people and a willingness to pursue growth in the profession through regular coaching, professional development, and appropriate further study. The administration is committed to supporting both early career and veteran teachers in their vocation.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a combination of middle- and high school courses in literature, history, theology, or Latin.
  • Develop lesson and unit plans consistent with archdiocesan standards and best practices in classical education.
  • Differentiate instruction, assessment, and engagement for students with different learning needs.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding students’ academic progress and human formation and actively develop positive home-school relationships.
  • Reflect on pedagogical practices through regular observation and coaching.
  • Mentor several secondary students of the same sex via monthly lunch meetings.

Offer a once per week ungraded enrichment course in an area of personal interest and expertise (current examples include studio art, art history, ecumenical theology, rosary making, student leadership council, cooking, and music performance).

Participate in other roles related to being a part of the school community, including assisting with student retreats and concerts, attending open houses, etc.

Participate actively in the professional community through collaboration with colleagues in a range of contexts.

Potentially serve as homeroom teacher, which involves facilitating parent-teacher conferences, hosting students at the beginning and end of the day and coordinating with colleagues during grade-specific activities.

Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Successful applicants will embody St. Monica Catholic School’s commitment to Christian intellectual, spiritual and moral formation. They should meet or exceed the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant humanities discipline
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to form relationships with students, colleagues, parents, outside stakeholders, and the larger St. Monica community
  • Experience or coursework in secondary education strongly preferred
  • Ability to manage record keeping for a variety of served students.
  • Complete Virtus safe environment training and a background check

Physical Requirements:

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as:

  • Functioning in classroom space – walking, sitting, standing, reaching
  • Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse and typing
  • Must be able to stand for up to two hours instructing a classroom of learners
  • Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on a frequent basis

Benefits Information:

  • Salary based upon education and experience. Compensation range from $50,000-$75,000
  • Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, degrees, and certifications.
