Overview
The Music Director/Music Teacher is a parish position that serves both the church and school to support each other’s music programs. This position has two primary roles: St. Brendan Parish Music Director and St. Brendan Parish School’s Music Teacher. The Music Director/Music Teacher reports directly to the pastor and the principal. This position is in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
Parish Music Director:
Key Responsibilities
• Responsible for the design and coordination of music for all liturgies.
• Leads and/or accompanies music for many of the liturgies for the parish and school
• Duties may involve the selection of music, teaching music to the assembly
• Develops and leads adult and student choirs
• Recruits and supervises musicians
• Requires instrumental/and or vocal skills and strong knowledge and appreciation of Roman Catholic Liturgy
• Reports directly to the pastor
• Coordinates special music for Easter and Christmas and other special liturgies
• Select and calendar hymns for each month
School Music Teacher Key Responsibilities
• Help students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences
• Teach music classes to grades Kindergarten through 8th grade
• Design music lesson plans appropriate for each grade level
• lnstruct students in the use of various musical instruments
• Lead and teach students to sing a variety of songs, including those used in Mass and during sacraments
• lntegrate Catholic, faith-based music into the curriculum
• Reports directly to the principal and/or delegate with pastor input
• Coordinates special music for Easter and Christmas and other special liturgies
Qualifications
The candidate should be a practicing Catholic and an active member of a Catholic Parish. The candidate should possess:
• Associate of Arts or bachelor’s degree, preferably in music and art
• Classroom management skills
• Strong communication skills
• Previous experience in effectively leading musicians to include a choir
• Commitment to excellence, rigor, and teamwork
• Strong organization and time management skills
• The ability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays on occasion.
This exempt salaried position is split between the church and the school. School will require three days a week and preparation for student performances. The pastor will determine church hours which will include Saturday, Sunday and regular choir practice. Extra work may be required for special sacramental liturgies. Far example, First Communion, Confirmation, Funerals and Weddings. The Parish Music Director will also be responsible to schedule weekly cantors and musicians as needed.
Salary: $74,000- 75,000 per year (exempt position)
