Job Summary
The High School English / Literature Teacher is responsible for teaching literature, composition, and related language arts courses in accordance with classical pedagogy and the mission of Regina Luminis Academy. The teacher will guide students in close reading of great texts, thoughtful discussion, and disciplined writing, helping them grow in clarity of thought and expression while engaging literature within a Catholic intellectual and moral framework.
Specific Responsibilities
Teach assigned high school English and literature courses using classical methods such as close reading, Socratic discussion, and formal writing instruction.
Select and teach literary works that reflect the Western canon and the Catholic intellectual tradition.
Instruct students in grammar, composition, rhetoric, and literary analysis.
Develop lesson plans and assessments aligned with the school’s curriculum and scope and sequence.
Foster a classroom environment marked by order, respect, intellectual seriousness, and charity.
Assign, evaluate, and provide timely feedback on student writing and other assessments.
Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress.
Communicate clearly and professionally with parents, colleagues, and administrators.
Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events.
Serve as a model of articulate speech, thoughtful writing, and Christian virtue.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of English literature and literary analysis.
Facility with teaching writing, grammar, and rhetoric at the secondary level.
Ability to lead thoughtful, text-centered discussions.
Appreciation for classical education and the role of literature in the formation of the moral imagination.
Commitment to the teachings and moral vision of the Catholic Church.
Effective classroom management and organizational skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to collaborate with faculty and pursue ongoing professional growth.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
Teaching certification is preferred but not required for well-qualified candidates.
Prior high school teaching experience is desirable, though strong candidates new to teaching are encouraged to apply.
Familiarity with or openness to classical education and Catholic pedagogy is strongly preferred.
