The Parish of St. John Paul II in Olathe, Kansas was founded in 2016. It is located in a rapidly growing suburb of Kansas City. The Parish has recently acquired a 23-acre plot of land and developed a master plan with classically designed structures. A capital campaign is underway to construct the first phase of their church. Funds from their campaign are being used to purchase and renovate a vacated school in the neighborhood as a temporary location for the soon-to-be-founded St. John Paul II Academy. The founding Head of School will be hired in the Spring of 2024 in order to have one year on the ground in advance of welcoming the first classes in the Fall of 2025.


Catholic education consists in the synthesis of faith and culture, and faith and life, the fruit of which is wisdom. The Head of School, then, must possess wisdom and be capable of fostering a wise vision of life in his or her faculty, staff, students, and parents through the cultivation of the love of learning and the desire for God, thus begetting well-formed, virtuous and lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.


With the mode of the receiver determining that which can be received, and therefore that which can be shared, the Head of School must have a breadth and depth of learning, from the Classics through Modernity, and most importantly, a steadfast relationship with Jesus rooted in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. Three to five years of administrative experience in a classical, liberal arts Catholic institution is valued, as is a doctorate/masters. Experience in a newly-founded institution is highly appreciated.


Although it is a duty of the whole community, but given that it falls especially to parents to ensure a distinctive Christian educational environment, the Head of School must be well-equipped to foster this responsibility of parents and develop the means to fulfill this essential task. Knowledge alone is insufficient. The successful candidate must be able to make lofty truths accessible and compelling to people from all walks of life. Furthermore, the Head of School must be capable of developing the bonds of fellowship with and among his or her teachers, for the successful transmission of the Christian message depends to an extraordinary extent upon them. The Head of School must know how to cultivate in the faculty an awareness of the eternal Logos, who stands behind every discipline taught, and he or she must foster the desire in the faculty to seek Him through the work at hand, and by so doing, instill the same habit in their students.


As the founding Head of School, familiarity with a classical, liberal arts curriculum is imperative, as is the prudence to implement and develop it according to the concrete reality at hand. Cartesianism has no place in the operative philosophy of the St. John Paul II Academy. Rather, a reverence for the true nature of the human person, and an appreciation for the full array of truths that shed light on what it means to be a human being fully alive is valued as a guiding light, with St. John Paul II’s teaching and life being an interpretative key. Yet, without the proper organizational and creative abilities, the fruitfulness of the leader’s efforts is confounded. Thus, the successful candidate must have acquired these habits that support effective leadership and execution of the educational plan.


The St. John Paul II Academy is a parochial mission, receiving substantial financial and moral support from parishioners. The Head of School must be involved in the life of the parish, constantly looking for ways to collaborate, to contribute and to involve parishioners in the Academy’s mission. The Head of School will form and be responsible for the Academy’s Commission, which will be advisory in nature, as well as executive, so that the Head of School’s reach and service may be extended. The Head of School will report to St. John Paul II’s Pastor. They will collaborate on the larger vision of the Academy. The Pastor does not micromanage, but entrusts the Head of School with all that is proper to his or her area of expertise and mission.


Olathe is strategically located in Johnson County, one of the wealthiest counties in the country, located approximately 20 miles southwest of Kansas City. The area provides its residents with easy access to urban amenities while enjoying all the benefits of a suburban lifestyle.

Area amenities include numerous parks and recreational facilities, such as the expansive Heritage Park and the Olathe Community Center. The job market in Olathe is diverse, with opportunities in robust healthcare, technology, and manufacturing. The cost of living is reasonable to national averages, contributing to the city’s overall affordability. In 2017, USA Today ranked Olathe as one of America’s 50 best cities to live in.
